Stolen Childhood: Russia's Policy of Abduction and Re-education of Ukrainian Children

A contribution following the lecture evening "The Abducted Children of Ukraine" (Heidelberg) There are numbers that cannot be resolved into statistics because behind each of them stands a name, a face, a family that has been waiting for years. According to the Ukrainian government, more than 20,000 children have been taken from the occupied territories to the Russian Federation since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion. The Yale Humanitarian Research Lab identified at least 43 facilities in Russia and on the annexed Crimea in 2023, where Ukrainian children were housed, and estimated that there are over 6,000 documented cases alone. Later evaluations by the lab reported more than 30,000 identified children at over a hundred locations. Aid organizations like Save Ukraine believe that the actual number is significantly higher, with some estimates reaching up to 250,000 or 300,000. This range itself is a reflection of the problem: A state that systematically obscures origins leaves no reliable record of its victims.
