Ukrainian Medical Association in Germany (UAMD)
The Ukrainian Medical Association in Germany (UÄVD) is one of Germany’s oldest Ukrainian professional organisations, founded in 1945/46 in the post-war Displaced Persons camps. It connects physicians, dentists and pharmacists and supports healthcare in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Medical Association in Germany (UÄVD) was founded in 1945 in Regensburg, when Ukrainian medical professionals organised themselves in the DP camps of post-war Germany. In May 1946, the first scientific congress was held in Karlsfeld with around 200 physicians, leading to the formation of the Ukrainian Medical and Sanitary Association (UMSO). After a hiatus caused by the emigration wave of the late 1940s, the association was revived in 1975 and officially registered as a non-profit e.V. in 1998.
The association's purpose is the promotion of medical science and public healthcare in Ukraine. Activities include regular seminars and online webinars, scientific exchange between Ukrainian doctors in Germany and Ukraine, support for medical students, and the collection and delivery of medical equipment to Ukraine. UÄVD is a member of SFULT (World Federation of Ukrainian Medical Societies) and cooperates with the German Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer).
Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, UÄVD has significantly expanded its humanitarian work, providing medicines, medical equipment and support for hospitals and rehabilitation centres in Ukraine.
